AnonChat
An anonymous one-on-one chat with no accounts and no logs.
Why it exists
01I wanted to build a real-time system without a database. AnonChat pairs two strangers in memory, lets them talk, and forgets everything when they leave.
The constraint is the product: no accounts, no history, no profiles. The server holds a room and a socket, nothing else.

The constraints
02- 01No database, by design.
- 02Free hosting with cold starts and connection limits.
- 03Abuse and moderation are hard problems that cannot be solved with a log you promised not to keep.
- 04Mobile browsers drop sockets when the screen locks.
The approach
03Rooms in memory
A matchmaking queue pairs two sockets into a room object. Messages are relayed directly; nothing is written to disk. Disconnect removes the room.
No account, but a report path
The prototype includes a simple report action that ends the room. It is not a full moderation system, but it gives the user an exit that is faster than closing the tab.
What it actually does
04- 01Instant one-on-one matchmaking.
- 02No registration, no profiles, no chat logs.
- 03Typing indicators and online count.
- 04Next and leave controls.
- 05Synthesised notification sounds with Web Audio.
Technical notes
05Express serves the client; Socket.io handles matchmaking and message relay. Rooms are plain objects in memory and are deleted on disconnect. Deployment is designed for Render's free tier.
An experimental AI-worker service added simulated participants for testing matchmaking at low traffic. It is not part of the public chat experience.

Honest limits
06- 01No persistent moderation or ban system.
- 02Free hosting can sleep.
- 03No end-to-end encryption; messages are relayed by the server.
- 04Not deployed publicly yet.
What it taught me
07“Real-time features are easy to demo and hard to operate. Reconnection, abuse and mobile socket behaviour are the actual product.”
