Abhisandhan
A focus and screen-time app that helps you take your attention back.
Why it exists
01I could see how much time I was losing to short videos, but every screen-time app I tried was either too easy to dismiss or too aggressive to live with. Abhisandhan started as a tool for myself: show the usage honestly, then make the distracting app harder to open.
It grew into a full Android app with focus sessions, app blocking and a companion web page. It is published on Google Play and built with Last Hope Developers.

The constraints
02- 01Google Play policies around accessibility and usage-access permissions.
- 02Aggressive battery optimisation on Indian Android phones.
- 03The app had to keep working offline.
- 04A small team working around school.
The approach
03Show the cost before the block
The dashboard leads with time and unlock counts, not a score. The block screen appears only after the user has seen what the usage actually looks like.
Local data first
Usage records stay on the device. Cloud sync is optional and limited to settings and streaks, not the raw list of apps opened.
Make dismissal deliberate
Leaving a focus session takes an extra confirmation and a short delay. Not a trap, but enough friction to interrupt the habit of tapping through.
What it actually does
04- 01Daily usage tracking with per-app breakdowns.
- 02Focus sessions and app blocking.
- 03Friction screens with a short delay before bypass.
- 04Streaks and progress history.
- 05Google Play release, with a web companion.
Technical notes
05Flutter handles the interface and local state; Kotlin modules talk to Android's usage and accessibility APIs. A foreground service keeps focus sessions alive, and the app explains the battery exemptions it needs instead of silently failing.
The hardest part was surviving the variety of Android skins that kill background services.

Honest limits
06- 01Behaviour varies between phone manufacturers.
- 02Usage access must be granted manually.
- 03Cloud sync is limited; the app is local-first by design.
- 04Some features depend on Android version.
What it taught me
07“A habit tool has to be boring in the right way. The moment it becomes a game, people optimise the game instead of the habit.”
